For over two hundred years Cannon Hall was home to the Spencer-Stanhope family. The Hall is now a museum with collections of fine furniture, Old Master paintings, stunning glassware and colourful pottery, some of which are displayed in period settings such as the Victorian Parlour.
Cannon Hall Museum contains collections of fine furniture, old master paintings, stunning glassware and colourful pottery. In addition it is home to 'Charge!', the Regimental Museum of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary's Own).
Cannon Hall was designed by John Carr of York and is set in over 70 acres of historic parkland which includes beautiful formal gardens providing a perfect setting for picnics or relaxing strolls.

It also houses 'Charge', the Regimental Museum of the 13th/18th Hussars (Queen Mary's Own), which is a must for anyone interested in military history. Refurbished with assistance from the Heritage Lottery Fund, it illustrates the part played by the Regiment in many major battles such as the Charge of the Light Brigade and includes memorabilia dedicated to Lord Baden Powell.
Covering over 70 acres of parkland, landscaped in the 1760's by Richard Woods, the park is an ideal place for a relaxing walk or family outing. The historic walled garden adjacent to the main Hall dates from the 1760's and can be enjoyed by visitors all year round. An annual event in September celebrates the pear trees, which were first grown here in the early eighteenth century.
One of the greenhouses is home to the 200 year old Cannon Hall vine, which was grown from a seed brought back by John Spencer-Stanhope from the Continent in 1802. A cutting of the vine was exported to Australia, cultivated, and its ancestors produce today's fine Australian wines.

The combination of animals, beautiful countryside and value for money make Cannon Hall Open Farm a place which appeals to the whole family. There are plenty of baby animals on show whatever time of the year you choose to visit this award-winning venue. There's always something new to see on each trip and the playful piglets are popular all year round.
Spring lambing is a favourite time for many and lambs are born from Christmas right through to Easter when pygmy goat kids arrive. These little fellows will be particularly keen to meet you if you pick up a bag of animal food at the farm entrance. Blossom the huge shire horse is often hungry too and, like the donkeys, hates to be left out when there is food around. Alongside those animals you might expect to find on a farm you'll also find unusual creatures like llamas and wallabies and, if you're really lucky you might see a baby joey peeping out of it's mothers pouch.
There's an adventure playground providing fun for the children. A spacious tea room serving high quality fresh ground coffee, speciality teas and everything from a quick snack to a hot meal. In the farm shop you will find wonderful farm produce alongside a wide army of food, toys and gift items. There's plenty to interest the casual browser or the shopper in search of something a little different. Huge displays of pickles, jams and chutneys weigh down the shelves. It's hard not to find something you like. The fresh meat section boasts a wide variety of superb sausages along with wonderful dry cured bacon and ham. You'll find perfectly matured traditional beef, fine lamb and tender pork. If you've forgotten just how good food can taste, you'll find plenty of reminders at the Farm Shop. Parking is available next to the farm and is free for coaches and disabled visitors who will find good facilities and easy access to the farm.

» Monk Bretton Priory
Barnsley is fortunate to have within its boundary the extensive remains of a Priory, originally founded under the Cluniac order, which offers much for the visitor to appreciate. The open space of the priory grounds and the views across the wooded countryside still convey the feeling of peace and tranquility as benefited monastery life. But this belies the turbulent and often violent past of this sleeping ruin.
It was founded in 1154 as the Priory of St Mary Magdelene of Lund by Adam Fitswane, sited here on the Lund, from Old-Norse ‘lundr’ meaning a sacred woodland grove. In course of time the Priory took the name of the nearby village of Bretton to be commonly known as Monk Bretton Priory.

Redevelopment of Barnsley's transport interchange will see existing bus and rail facilities brought together through a unique, ground-breaking design and will provide a dramatic gateway into the town centre. A new footbridge in the interchange will start to form the link in the development of the ‘Green Sprint’, a footpath linking the urban centre to the surrounding outstanding countryside.
BY ROADThe town has excellent access to the national motorway network with Junction 37 of the M1 only 1 mile to the west of the town centre and Junctions 36 and 38 also serving Barnsley. The M18 and M62 are both within 20 miles of the town centre.
