The The Mall Barnsley is Barnsley's main shopping complex, housing 41 shops and adjacent to Barnsley Market. At various points during the year, it plays host to the visiting German Market which also runs through the main shopping streets and is very popular in the run up to the festive season.

It is owned and operated by The Mall Company, a large company that operates shopping centres throughout the UK.

Most popular community activity is the Mall Monster - the pink monster usually inhabited by 'Taz', the bubbly security officer/CCO, who frequents the children's ward of Barnsley General Hospital each year to hand out Easter Eggs and Christmas presents to sick children.

» Remarking Barnsley

Barnsley’s ambition is to be the 21st century market town at the heart of an enterprising and innovative local economy, taking advantage of it’s central location. The Remaking Barnsley regeneration programme is redefining Barnsley’s role in the world. This programme is committed to creating a thriving, vibrant and enjoyable urban environment in which people can live, work or play. Quality architecture set within an exciting and imaginative public realm, arts, culture and urban living are all part of this vision alongside trade and employment.

1. Westgate Civic Offices
In October 2005, work started on the new Council offices at Westgate as part of the new Civic and commercial core of the town centre. This contemporary five floor building will make a major contribution to Remaking Barnsley, brining together many of the Council’s office-based staff into a single high quality, open plan building.

2. Gateway Plaza
Located at the top end of Westgate this exciting development will provide a vibrant mix of high quality contemporary office accommodation, retail and café space, underground parking and luxury apartments. There are also further plans for hotel and leisure facilities.

3. Barnsley Markets project
This is the largest single regeneration project ever undertaken in the Borough. The network of clear roofed streets and spaces will attract visitors to our town as well as providing jobs, In addition to offering a new, purpose built and quality home for Barnsley’s famous market it will also bring restaurants and bistros, a brand new department store, multiplex cinema, several levels of shops and town centre apartments. It will provide Barnsley people with an exciting place to shop, socialise and be entertained, linked strongly to the rest of the town centre.

4. Civic and Mandela Gardens
Visitors to the new Civic will be able to enjoy three floors of design and craft shops, an exhibition area and an event centre, bringing together shopping, social events and performances under one roof. The original Grade 2 listed structure and many of the original features of this proud Victorian building will be preserved and this unique development brings together the many creative elements that exists in the town to foster arts, crafts and other complementary industries.

5. The former Queens Hotel
The conversion, by Raley’s Solicitors, of the former Queens Hotel into a prestigious office development will provide a prominent location for business at the heart of the town centre.

6. Barnsley Transport Interchange
This £24 million gateway to Barnsley will combine bus, rail, coach and taxi travel in a single new complex as well as shops, improved car aprking and a travel information centre.

7. Digital Media Centre
The striking architecture of the Digital Media Centre (DMC) is the hub dedicated to the needs of new and existing businesses in the creative and digital industries. With 72 separate business units, meeting rooms and conference facilities, Barnsley’s track record for innovation and for new technology will be enhanced by this exciting project.

8. Town Hall Gardens
This project seeks to secure a major improvement to the garden frontage of the Town Hall and, importantly, the setting for a key public art installation known as the “Mining Art Feature”
